A New Start with a Hand Puppet: Who, What and How

The new school year is a great time to get a fresh start with a hand puppet in the classroom or group.

  1. Reflection: Think back to last year when you didn’t use the hand puppet as often as you would have liked. Where did it go wrong? What were your expectations and at what point did you decide to stop using the puppet? Think about it and be aware of what you would like to do differently.
  2. Starting with a Hand Puppet: Working with a hand puppet is great, but it can also be challenging. We often set high standards for ourselves, but be aware that children especially enjoy the puppet’s presence, regardless of whether everything goes perfectly.
  3. Gone with Perfection: Let go of the idea of perfection and give yourself space to practice. Young children are a great audience for a beginning performer, so use the opportunity to experiment and grow in your puppetry.
  4. Who, What and How: Ask yourself three important questions: Who is your puppet? What do you want to achieve? How are you going to do that? These questions will help you work more specifically with a hand puppet. Determine who your puppet is, what you want to achieve and what approach you will use.

Conclusion: The new school year is a great time to make a fresh start with a hand puppet. Reflect, release perfectionism and be willing to practice. Think about who your puppet is, what you want to achieve and how you will do it. Thanks for your interest and until the next blog!
